The benefits of self-management

A recent report was published entitled "Supporting self-management; A guide to enabling behaviour change for health and wellbeing using person and community centred approaches". The guide is part of the NHS England-funded Realising the Value programme led by Nesta and the Health Foundation and it discusses the benefits of many of the self-management techniques we teach.

The guide outlines how the science of behaviour can help people to self-manage their health and wellbeing. It is written for people who support those living with long-term conditions, or who help people avoid these conditions using person- and community-centred approaches.

We utilise the principles and techniques of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) throughout our education and training programmes and our evidence from supporting over 130,000 people shows that this approach is effective. 

Our Experience

An excellent example of how we break-down the barriers, making the concept of self-management fit within the "EAST" model ( Easy: Attractive; Social: Timely) and prioritising person- and community-centred approaches can be evidenced in our work with Southend-on-Sea.

Self management uk uses various evaluation methods, including the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) and HeiQ (Health evaluation impact questionnaire, working with commissioners and other stakeholders to ensure the best outcomes are achieved for the participants and the wider health economy.
