Testimonials

The input of the young people via the Expert Patient group has been vital to the success of the AQuA children & young people’s workstream.

A group of young people from self management uk have attended the last two Children & Young People (CYP) Improvement Community events and have shared their experiences of living with a long term condition in a way that has helped inform commissioning in the North West and helped shape the AQuA CYP work programme.

At our last event in February 2013, the young people led the whole morning and engaged the professionals in the room (from all professional backgrounds) in a series of well structured and thought provoking activities. It was very humbling to be part of this workshop and to learn from both good and bad experiences as young users of health services.

The input of the young people was professional and well planned to suit the particular needs of the Improvement community and I hope to continue to utilise this expert source of advice throughout the rest of the Improvement programme.

“I am excited about this new way of working. My job is now more than ticking boxes to meet the GP contract - it feels like I am working with patients to make a real difference to their quality of life.”

After the training I changed my approach. I now concentrate on finding the motivating factors and using them to engage patients, which has been much more successful. These listening skills are not taught in our medical training and have been invaluable.
